    The Classic Literature Review in Prosthodontics course is a seminar in which a select number of articles relating to each of the main areas of interest in prosthodontics is reviewed and critically evaluated for its significance to the historical development and current practice of Prosthodontics. Each resident is responsible for reviewing the articles assigned to him or her.

  • PROR 7024 - Occlusion/Articulator Seminar I (4 Credit Hours)



    These seminars are a combination of literature reviews covering all aspects of occlusion and mandibular movement, lectures that coordinate with the literature reviews, and hands-on workshops through which the residents are taught the materials, instruments and techniques for recording, measuring, modifying and understanding occlusion and mandibular movement as it pertains to prosthodontics. Several of the most common and useful articulator systems are presented.

Residents are provided a list of seminar topics and must thoroughly research the topic, prepare a well-organized, thorough and up-to-date Powerpoint presentation, and then deliver this presentation in a seminar session with their fellow residents and supervising faculty. Residents must be able to respond to questions with appropriate evidence from the literature.

    Third-year prosthodontics residents gain experience in clinical, pre-clinical laboratory, and/or lecture format teaching based on the opportunities available in the DMD program curriculum at the time this teaching rotation assignment occurs.   • PSRY 5000 - Basic Psychiatry (10 Credit Hours)



    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Phase II This required six week clerkship will allow the student intensive experience with diagnosis and the treatment of psychiatric patients. The student will perform a complete evaluation of assigned patients, with collaboration and guidance of the staff, including a physical and mental status examination involved in formulating and carrying out a treatment plan for the patient including use of individual psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, family therapy, group therapy and other therapeutic modalities.

  • PSRY 5004 - Family Therapy (7 Credit Hours)



    Students desiring supervision and training in the psychiatric assessment and treatment of individuals from a family systems perspective are encouraged to sign up for this elective. Students can expect to be involved in the treatment of marital and family therapy cases in both the outpatient and inpatient units. Supervision for these activities will be provided by faculty and will include live case observation as well as opportunities in psychotherapy.     3-South is an adult inpatient psychiatric unit offering an interdisciplinary approach to patient care. The student will be included as an integral part of a general hospital psychiatry inpatient team. Responsibilities will include direct patient care, participation in team meetings, participation in group therapy, psychotherapy with supervision, and associated didactic learning experiences. The diverse patient population on 3South will provide the student with learning experiences in Eating Disorders, Electroconvulsive Therapy and Organic Mental Disorders, as well as Mood and Psychotic Disorders.     The objective of the Clinical Neurobiology Research Seminar will be to familiarize the student with current topics in the clinical neurosciences. Emphasis will be placed on a critical reading of the literature, with teaching focused on methods of evaluating the integrity and context of the research literature. Topics will focus on the relationship of behavior to brain chemistry. Discussion will highlight the functional role of different neurotransmitter receptor subtypes, neuropeptides, and second messengers in regulation of stress adaptation, and the expression of cognitive, emotional and perceptual behaviors. The course will review selected advances in behavioral neuroendocrinology, neuropharmacology and the genetic bases of personality. Each student will be required to write a review paper for course completion. The goals of the seminar will be both to contribute toward the development of the student’s interest in a particular area, as well as to integrate an understanding of where the field is advancing relevant to future physician careers.

    This elective will explore the molecular neurobiological markers of antipsychotic actions on the brain in rats. The common molecular markers will be studied in body fluids of early psychotic and chronic schizophrenic patients before and after treatment with antipsychotics. The association of these molecular substrates to several key symptomatic dimensions will be examined in patients to understand their clinical applicability.   • PSRY 5033 - Elective in Residential Treatment (7 Credit Hours)



    Goals: To educate and expose students to the general medical principles and management of critically ill surgical patients in the Intensive Care Unit environment. Objectives: To provide the student doctor with the opportunity to become a member of a treatment team that includes a forensic and child psychiatrist, understand psychopathology of adolescents with self-destructive and aggressive behaviors, learn about specific evaluation and treatment of sexually reactive and aggressive behaviors, learn and practice the evaluation of trauma and aggression with specific skills taught in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), learn about the psychopharmacology of these disorders, learn about the role of the physician in multidisciplinary teams, and learn about substance abuse/dependence evaluation and treatment in this population. At the end of the rotation, students will be able to perform a basic evaluation of adolescents with aggression problems, trauma, sexually aggressive behavior, and substance abuse/dependence issues; perform the cognitive restructuring part of CBT; perform a basic substance dependence evaluation; use the following assessment tools: Children’s Depressive Inventory, Trauma Symptom Scales for Children and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test; understand the Abel screen and the JSOAP for sexually aggressive patients; and understand the psychopathology of PTSD and how to assess patients for it. Students will participate in treatment teams performing psychotherapy, evaluations, psychiatric supervision and teaching, and doing a brief presentation. Clinical performance evaluations by faculty assess the following skills: patient care - psychiatric interviewing, mental status examination, performance on administering assessment tools, and understanding the psychopharmacology of this population; medical knowledge - practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and system-based learning.
