About the Program

The Department of Oral Biology and Maxillofacial Pathology offers master of science and doctoral degrees. The program’s goals are to:

  • provide research opportunities applying the scientific method to an oral health problem and
  • provide graduate-level didactic instruction in the basic sciences.

For students with a clinical degree, the research component and didactic instruction enhance understanding of the clinical courses in dental specialty residency programs.

Admission Requirements


Completed Online Application for Graduate Programs

Application Fee: $30

Application Deadlines:  March 1 ‐ FALL entry ‐ Deadline is March 1 for international applicants.  May 1‐ FALL entry ‐ Deadline is May 1 for all other applicants.

Note: Applications and supporting materials received after the program deadline will be considered on a space‐available basis.

Minimum Degree Requirement and Official Transcripts: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.

Official transcripts are required from all universities and colleges ever attended. Only in the case of transcripts from international colleges/universities will an official course‐by‐course transcript evaluation be accepted in lieu of an official transcript.

Official transcripts should be sent to MCG’s Office of Academic Admission as part of your “Admissions Packet”. To remain official, all transcripts must remain in the original, unopened, sealed and stamped/signed envelope from the Registrar’s office of the issuing institution. Alternatively, transcripts can be mailed to MCG’s Office of Academic Admission directly from the Registrar’s office of the issuing institution.

Transcript/Credential Evaluation of Foreign Transcripts: An official, professional course‐by‐course evaluation is required for all foreign educational transcripts and documents from one of the following three credentials evaluation services: Josef Silny & Associates, Inc., World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE).

References: References/recommendations from three individuals are required using the Admissions Reference Form for Graduate Programs at the Medical College of Georgia. References should be individuals qualified to assess your prior academic, employment, artistic, research and/or clinical experience, qualifications and potential, as applicable.
• GRE Requirement: Minimum combined Verbal and Quantitative score of 900. Official GRE scores are required (only the General GRE test is required).

All official GRE scores must be submitted to MCG’s OAA directly from the Education Testing Service (ETS) and must be less than five years old. The institution code for submission of GRE scores to MCG is 5406. Please do not select a department code.

National Dental Board Exam (NDBE) Part I with a minimum score of 80 will be accepted in place of GRE exam scores; test must be taken within the last 5 years.

TOEFL Exam Scores:
Minimum score of 550 paper‐based, 213 computer based or 79 internet based.

Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test scores are required for applicants whose first language is not English. The institution code for submission of TOEFL scores to MCG is 5406.  Please do not select a department code.

Exemption from the TOEFL requirement is allowed for graduate students who submit proof of earning a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college/university where English is the language of instruction.

Admission Recommendations

GPA: Minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

* Substitutions and/or waivers of minimum requirements must first be supported and approved at the program level and then formally approved by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

The MS curriculum is 36 total credit hours. Most MS students are jointly enrolled in a specialty residency program in the School of Dentistry or at Ft. Gordon (usually Peridontics). The curriculum provided is typical for students enrolled in the two year Prosthodontics programs.
