General Information


Legal Notices

The statements set forth in this catalog are for informational purposes only and should not be construed as the basis of a contract between a student and this institution.

While the provisions of the catalog will ordinarily be applied as stated, the Medical College of Georgia reserves the right to change any provision listed in this catalog, including but not limited to academic requirements for graduation, without actual notice to individual students. Reasonable effort will be made to keep students advised of any such changes. Information on changes will be available in the offices of the president, academic deans, and enrollment and student affairs. It is especially important that students note that it is their responsibility to keep themselves apprised of current graduation requirements for their particular degree program.

Limitation on Institutional Liability

In the event that an administrative hearing officer or a court of record determines that “publications” issued by the institution create a contractual or quasi-contractual relationship with any person, the amount of damages recoverable by the parties shall be limited to the amount of consideration paid by the person for the privilege of admission, enrollment, continued enrollment or other service rendered by the institution to such person. As used herein, the term “publications” (without limiting the generality of the normal meaning of the term) shall be deemed to include any and all written or electronic forms or other documents issued by the institution concerning applications for admission, enrollment or continued enrollment, waivers of liability, consents to medical treatment, dormitory occupancy and any and all other written forms, documents, letters or other materials issued by the university in furtherance of its educational mission.

Student Health Service

Services provided by the medical clinic include diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, gynecologic services, including Pap smears, contraceptive advice, travel medicine, treatment of benign  lesions, biopsy and/or removal of small cysts, moles, warts and tumors, suture of lacerations, visual screening and EKGs. Clinic hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Phone 706-721-3448 for appointments.

All Medical College of Georgia students are required to have health insurance.  Pearce & Pearce, Inc. is the insurance company selected by the University System of Georgia to serve our students.All students are charged a student health insurance premium for each semester.
 
If you already have health insurance that meets the institution requirements, you must complete a waiver application.  P&P will confirm your coverage and let us know if you are to be granted a waiver of this insurance premium.  If your waiver is approved, then a credit will be posted to your Pulse account.


Immunization Requirements

The specific minimum immunization requirements at the Medical College of Georgia are established by Board of Regents policy, which is periodically reviewed and modified. The Board of Regents policy allows the Medical College of Georgia to enhance these requirements, with the concurrence of the Chancellor of the University System of Georgia. MCG’s specific immunization requirements are also periodically reviewed and modified. With the concurrence of the President of the Medical College of Georgia and Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, individual schools may require additional immunizations.

All entering MCG students must provide the MCG Student Health Service with sufficient evidence that they are fully immunized or have proof of immunity with serological titer against Mumps, Rubella (German Measles), Rubeola (Red Measles), Polio, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Hepatitis B and Varicella Chicken Pox). Students are also required to have had a PPD (tuberculin test) within three months prior to the first day of class at MCG and annually thereafter.

 

Communication Policy

All students at the Medical College of Georgia are expected to check their GroupWise e-mail accounts on a daily basis for important university announcements and other pertinent information. Students are also expected to update their contact information in Banner when necessary.

On-Campus Housing

Residence Life manages on-campus housing for approximately 220 students. For the student who lives on campus, MCG offers a variety of living environments in both single occupancy rooms and community apartment living.

Our experienced staff seeks to provide students with intellectual, social, cultural, and recreational experiences to enhance the student’s stay at the University, and to facilitate academic success and individual growth.

Living in a residence hall is a unique experience that provides opportunities to meet new people and to explore new ideas and ways of relating to others.

Residence hall living is a vital part of the educational experience in which students are encouraged to assume individual and group responsibility.

On-campus apartment living provides students the opportunity to cook their own meals, enjoy additional living space and gain valuable experience living with other students in a more independent environment

Smoke Free Environment Policy Statement

The Medical College of Georgia, as the health sciences university of the state of Georgia, is committed to promoting a healthy environment for all Georgia citizens including students and employees of the Medical College of Georgia. Since January 1990, the Medical College of Georgia has been a “smoke-free” institution. The use of tobacco products by any person in an MCG building or vehicle is prohibited. Provided certain conditions are met, exceptions to this policy may be granted for long-term patients of the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home and patients whose physician prescribes “smoking privileges” which are properly documented in the patient’s chart.
