Career Information
Nursing is one of the oldest and most trusted health professions. Nurses provide care to persons at various levels of wellness and illness across the lifespan. Nurses organize and supervise care, provide education and support for patients and their families, and improve care through research and evidence-based practices.
MCG’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to function effectively in all areas of nursing practice. The program prepares graduates to work in a wide variety of clinical settings and provides the foundation for masters’ and doctoral degrees in nursing.
The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (www.aacn.nche.edu/CCNE/reports/accprog.asp), and the MCG School of Nursing is fully approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing.
Skills and Interests Suited for a Career in Nursing

Nurses are compassionate, honest and caring. Nursing have the ability to make rational decisions, use good judgment, organize, plan and evaluate. Nurses must work well with people and establish and maintain effective professional relationships. Physical and mental stamina is essential. Nurses practice in a variety of specialty areas in hospitals, communities and other health care settings.
Due to the national shortage of registered nurses, career opportunities exist in a variety of public and private settings. Advancement and leadership opportunities are greater for the registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree.
Starting salaries range from $41,000-$55,000. Salaries for experienced staff nurses can exceed $60,000, while directors of nursing can earn in excess of $100,000 nationally. Many employers pay a salary differential for R.N.s with a B.S.N. degree.
MCG’s program prepares professional nurses as generalists in clinical practice. Graduates are prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. Our professional program builds on a foundation of knowledge in science, humanities and related professional disciplines. Students transfer to MCG after completing prenursing core courses at another college. Students apply for admission to the main campus in Augusta or our satellite campus in Athens, Georgia.
The program consists of 66 credit hours over five semesters. Students transfer in during the Summer session before the Junior year. The program is full time with classes Monday-Friday. Clinicals are scheduled during day, evening, and possibly weekend hours.

Clinicals occur in a wide variety of hospital and community settings, serving diverse populations where role development, critical thinking and leadership are emphasized. Our curriculum is innovative and technologically sophisticated. Faculty are experienced and committed to quality.

Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirements: Admission is based on an overall grade point average on all attempted academic courses (minimum 2.80 GPA required for consideration) and on completion of the required core curriculum. The mean GPA of recent classes has exceeded 3.50.

Official Transcripts /Credential Evaluation for Foreign Students: An official transcript is required from each college and university attended (in individually sealed envelopes). Transcripts must reflect completed or a plan to complete the core curriculum of the University System of Georgia prior to your MCG enrollment. The Medical College of Georgia does not offer freshman or sophomore courses.
Transcripts should be mailed to MCG’s OAA directly from the Registrar’s office of the institution. Applicants may also deliver or mail official \ transcripts to MCG’s OAA if the transcript remains in the original, unopened, sealed and stamped/signed envelope from the Registrar’s office at the institution.
An official, professional course‐by‐course evaluation is required for all foreign educational transcripts and documents from one of the following three credentials evaluation services: Josef Silny & Associates, Inc., World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE).

2 References: All applicants must submit two completed Admission Reference Forms for Undergraduate Programs. The forms should be completed by individuals who can speak to the applicants academic, clinical, and/or employment experiences and have known the applicant for six months or more.

SAT/ACT Requirements: SAT or ACT scores must be submitted and should either be requested from Educational Testing Service or ACT , or should appear on the student’s high school or college transcript (or other document submitted) for undergraduate applicants. A score of at least 450 on the SAT verbal section, or at least 18 on the English section of the ACT, is required.

TOEFL Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English must submit official TOEFL scores. A minimum score of 213 on the computer-based exam or 550 on the paper exam is required for admission consideration.

Essay: Applicants must submit an essay detailing why they have chosen to pursue a career in nursing.
Admission Recommendations
- GPA - Applicants should make sure that their GPA is at least a 2.80. Although a GPA of 2.80 will not guarantee admission, it will assure applicants that their file will be reviewed (if all other admission requirements are met). The average GPA of accepted students is 3.5.
- Essay - Applicants are asked to write an essay to explain why they have decided to pursue a career in nursing. Applicants should make sure their essay addresses the questions being asked. The essay should not contain any grammatical errors. Nursing is about caring and compassion for others so applicants should use their strengths in these areas to enhance their essay.
- Prior experience - Applicants should acquire some experience in the field - do some job shadowing and/or volunteering.
- Job Shadowing – Applicants should seek opportunities to shadow a nurse.
- References – Applicants should make sure that they use the quality of references that the application specifies. Using references that are not specified can have a negative impact on their chances of being accepted.
- Supporting documents:Applicants should make every effort to submit their supporting documents (ACT/SAT scores). Official transcripts, and letters of recommendation) immediately after submitting their online application. Applicants not submitting all of their supporting documents in a timely manner take the risk of not being considered for admission. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to submit all documents prior to October 15th.
