Post-Master’s Certificate in Family Nurse Practitioner


About the Program

This program prepares advanced-practice nurses to provide primary health care to clients, families and communities. All students take core courses covering theoretical foundations for nursing practice, health systems and models, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, nursing research and advanced health assessment. Clinical courses emphasize the care of adult pediatric and geriatric patients and their families.

This program is fully acredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Graduates are eligible for national board certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Career Opportunities

  • Primary care settings such as health clinics, medical offices and managed care settings.
  • Specialty settings such as cardiology, emergency medicine, occupational health, women’s health, psych-mental health and acute care.

Admission Requirements

  • BSN and/or Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Minimum of 1 year RN experience required before eginning clinical courses
  • Undergraduate or Graduate statistics course
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary schools
  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • Program may require an interview: Applicants who qualify for an interview will be contacted by the program’s admissions committee.
  • Three professional letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to assess prior academic and/or clinical performance.
  • A personal statement outlining our professional goals, why you want to become a nurse practitioner, outling the contributions you intend to make as a nure practioner and why you are interested in rural health care (Part V of the application.)
  • Official GRE score of 900 or higher (sum of verbal and quantitative) OR minimum MAT score of  400
  • Official TOEFL score of 550 paper-bsed, 79 Internet-based or 213 computer based if applicable.
  • An official comprehensive course-by-course report of all foreign educational documents from each foreign college and university attended is required (including calculation of grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Official verification of transcripts/course-by-course report must be submitted from one of the following three approved Foreign Credentials Evaluation Services, as our cost: Josef Silney & Associates, Inc. Workd Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE.)
  • Georgia RN Nursing license is required prior to enrollment

How to Apply

Apply online at www.mcg.edu/Admissions by May 1st for Fall Semester and October 1st for Spring semester. Successful applicants generally have at least a year of RN experience and most here at least two years of nursing experience.
