DHYG 4044 - Assessment of Recognized Dental Specialties (5 Credit Hours) Traditionally, registered dental hygienists are employed in general dentistry practice settings. This course is designed to allow the exploration of other unique specialty areas. A specialty is an area of dentistry that has been formally recognized by the American Dental Association as meeting the specified Requirements for Recognition of Dental Specialties. The responsibilities of the different areas of specialization, the requirements and other information can be found here in Dental Specialties. Currently there are nine dental specialties recognized by the ADA: Dental Public Health, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxiollofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Prosthodontics.
