    The nurse practitioner practicum experience provides the student an opportunity to assume responsibility for the primary healthcare services of individuals and families under the supervision of an established nurse practitioner and/or physician preceptor. Students will be expected to practice as a Nurse Practitioner, assuming increasing responsibility for planning and implementing therapeutic processes and for documenting and evaluating outcomes of care. This intensive practice experience allows the student to apply theories through the investigation and management of health problems in primary healthcare settings.

This course provides an orientation to the professional and scientific foundations of advanced practice psychiatric nursing. The evolving role of advanced practice psychiatric nurses will be placed in the context of the current healthcare system. Focus will be on the science underlying two models of evidenced-based treatments; biological interventions and behavioral therapies.     Prerequisite: Graduate DNP Standing or permission of the instructor. Directed Studies in Advanced Science involves the systematic attempt to explain a phenomena of interest. It is a foundational course in seminar format that allows students to explore the scientific underpinnings of advanced nursing practice. Under the direction of their advisors, students will design a concentrated self-directed learning plan based on the scientific knowledge needed for advanced practice in an area of clinical concentration or phenomenon of interest. It includes disciplinary questions while providing answers to questions that are at the core of the discipline of nursing (Meleis, 2005) and includes knowledge based on empirical evidence.
