This research degree program for allied health and related health professionals is interdisciplinary, research-oriented and requires a thesis.

Program Objectives


The objectives are to prepare:

  • Specialized clinical practitioners with advanced knowledge and skills in related basic and clinical sciences
  • Researchers who can formulate questions, organize and test ideas and examine information from basic and clinical sciences to apply to their disciplines
  • Leaders who can help plan, develop and deliver cost-effective, quality healthcare services

Application Deadline: December 1 - Summer entry. Note: Applications and supporting materials received after the program deadline will be considered on a space-available basis only.

Minimum Degree Requirements and Official Transcripts: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university. Evaluation of foreign educational transcripts must show a degree earned that is at least the US equivalency of a Bachelor’s degree.

Official transcripts are required from all universities and colleges ever attended. Only in the case of transcripts from international college/universities will an official course-by-course transcript evaluation be accepted in lieu of an official transcript.

Official transcripts should be sent to GHSU’s Office of Academic Admissions. To remain official, all transcripts must remain in the original, unopened, sealed, and stamped/signed envelope from the Registrar’s Office of the issuing institution.

Foreign Transcript/Credential Evaluation: An official, professional course-by-course evaluation based on official transcripts and documents is required for all foreign educational transcripts and documents from one of the following three credentials evaluation services: Josef Silny & Associates, Inc., World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators , Inc. (ECE). Offical transcript evaluations based on unofficial transcripts, documents, or copies will not fulfill this requirement.

References: Recommendations from three individuals are required. Referees should be individuals (usually college professors) qualified to critically assess the applicant’s prior academic, employment, artistic, research and/or clinical experience and qualifications (as applicable) as well as the applicant’s potential as a graduate student in the field/program selected.

Graduate reference forms and letters can be submitted online only. Applicants list names and provide information for three individuals as references during the online application process. Once the application is submitted, each referee will receive an email directing them to complete the online reference form. The completed reference form will then be forwarded to the Office of Academic Admissions via the online application system, CollegeNet. An applicant wishing to change a reference letter after the application has been submitted must log into his/her CollegeNet account and change the name and contact information for the reference.

GRE Requirement: Minimum combined Verbal and Quantitative score of 900. Official GRE scores are required (only the General GRE test is required).

All official GRE scores must be submitted to GHSU’s OAA directly from the Education Testing Service (ETS) and must be less than five years old. The institution code for submission of GRE scores to GHSU is 5406. Please do not select a department code.

TOEFL Scores: Minimum score of 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, or 79 internet-based.

Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are required for applicants whose first language is not English. The institution code for submission of TOEFL scores to GHSU is 5406. Please do not select a department code.

Exemption from the TOEFL requirement is allowed for graduate students who submit proof of earning a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college/university where English is the language of instruction.

Program Specific Requirements

Personal Interview: Includes writing sample. Interviews by invitation only. Applicants will be selected for an interview based on an initial review of submitted application materials. Selected applicants will be notified directly by the program.

Licensure and/or Certification: Proof of licensure to practice dental hygiene.

Admission Recommendations

GPA: Prefer GPA of 3.0 or higher. May consider candidates with a lower GPA based on extenuating circumstance, test scores (GRE), strengths in other areas and acceptance on a probationary status.

GRE: Competitive applicants will have a minimum combined verbal and quantitative score of 900.

*Substitutions and/or waivers of minimum requirements must first be supported and approved at the program level and then formally approved by the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies.

Completion of a minimum of 36 semester hours with the following minimum requirements:

  • Basic Science Core—7 semester hours
  • Research Tools and Methods—7 semester hours
  • Thesis Research—4 semester hours
  • Interdisciplinary/disciplinary Studies—18 semester hours
