The Master of Science in Medical Illustration Program is one of only four such programs in the nation. The two-year program is accredited by the Association of Medical Illustrators and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
Intensive illustration courses are supplemented with graduate science courses taken with medical students. Illustration courses cover pen and ink, monochromatic tone media, water color and mixed media. Computer use in medical illustration is taught in the first and second year.
Anatomical and surgical illustration for publication and interactive media is emphasized. Students spend four semesters observing and sketching in the operating room. Assignments offer practical experience with media for print applications as well as motion and electronic media.

Preliminary Application Deadline: January 31. The Applicant Preliminary Evaluation Form and preliminary portfolio must be submitted by the applicant directly to the Department of Medical Illustration by January 31. Formal Application Deadline: March 31. If invited for a personal interview in Augusta by the Medical Illustration Graduate Program, the interviewee must complete the GHSU Online Application for Graduate Programs and submit all required application materials to the Office of Academic Admissions by March 31.
Note: Applications received after the published deadlines will be considered on a space-available basis only.
Minimum Degree Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or greater from an accredited college or university.
Minimum GPA Requirements: Minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Exception: the Admissions Committee may consider extenuating circumstances; however, this may result in acceptance to the program on probationary status.
Official Transcript: Official transcripts are required from all colleges ever attended. Only in the case of transcripts from international colleges/universities will an official course-by-course evaluation of an official transcript be accepted in lieu of an official transcript. Transcripts should be mailed to the OAA directly from the Registrar’s Office of the institution. Applicants may also deliver or mail official transcripts to the OAA if the transcript remains in the original, unopened, sealed and stamped/signed envelope from the Registrar’s Office at the institution.
Transcript/credential evaluation of foreign transcripts: An official, professional course-by-course evaluation based on official transcripts and documents is required for all foreign educational transcripts and documents from one of the following three credentials evaluation services: Josef Silny & Associates, Inc., World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE). Official evaluations based on unofficial transcripts, documents, or copies will not fulfill this requirement.
References: Recommendations from three individuals are required. Referees should be individuals (usually college professors) qualified to critically assess the applicants prior academic, employment, artistic, research and/or clinical experience and qualifications (as applicable) as well as the applicants potential as a graduate student in the field/program selected.
Graduate reference forms and letters can be submitted online only. Applicants list names and provide information for three individuals as references during the online application process. Once the application is submitted, each referee will receive an email directing them to complete the online reference form. The completed reference form will then be forwarded to the Office of Academic Admissions via the online application system, CollegeNet. An applicant wishing to change a reference letter after the application has been submitted must log into his/her CollegeNet account and change the name and contact information for the reference.
Official GRE Scores: All official GRE scores must be submitted to the OAA directly from the Education Testing Service (ETS) and must be less than five years old. The institution code for submission of GRE scores to GHSU is 5406. Do not select a department code.
GRE Score Requirement: Minimum combined Verbal and Quantitative score of 900 on the GRE (only the General GRE test is required). Prefer combined Verbal and Quantitative score of 1000 or higher.
TOEFL exam score: Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test scores are required for applicants whose first language is not English. The institution code for submission of TOEFL scores to GHSU is 5406. Do not select a department code.
Minimum TOEFL score requirement: 550 paper-based, 213 computer based, or 79 internet based.
Exception: exemption from the TOEFL requirement is allowed for graduate students who submit proof of earning a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university at which English is the language of instruction.
Pre-requisite course work:
- Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy or Vertebrate morphology with a “C” or better grade, with student dissection of a large mammal-cat, fetal pig, etc…
- Computer graphics-Photoshop and Illustrator or equivalent
- Introduction to computers and computer graphics
- Human Physiology
- Life drawing from the nude model, including advanced-level courses
- Personal Interview (by invitation after approval of preliminary application)

The GHSU Department of Medical Illustration participates in the Academic Common Market. Students from Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia may petition their home state to learn whether they qualify for in-state tuition at GHSU.

- Preliminary application materials are reviewed by the department Admissions Committee. If approved, the applicant will be invited to Augusta for a personal interview with the Admissions Committee. Interviews are by invitation only, and are scheduled in February and March. A personal interview is required for admission. Travel to and from Augusta and hotel arrangements for the interview are the responsibility of the applicant.
- The applicant must bring a formal portfolio of work to the interview.
- Additionally, the interviewee will be required to complete the GHSU graduate application online.
- Once the OAA has received the completed application, the applicant will receive an email confirmation from the OAA with specific instructions for submitting the remaining application materials (references, transcripts, and test scores).
- Submitting a complete formal application packet is required—no admission actions will occur until the packet is 100% complete.
- The final decision on acceptance is made by the Department of Medical Illustration Admissions Committee. Applicants will be notified by April 15.
