Program Overview

The Master of Health Science in Speech-Language Pathology at Augusta University offers a comprehensive pedagogy of academic and clinical education for students interested to become a speech-language pathologist (SLP). The program is designed to prepare SLP graduate students to demonstrate clinical acumen necessary for employment in healthcare and education settings, private practice, or industry. The two-year program will cultivate educational innovation by combining didactic and experiential classroom learning opportunities with clinical education to optimize educational value. The program is a full-time, lock-step model spanning six consecutive semesters comprised of 27 courses and 72 credit hours. The program’s mission is to prepare students to become highly competent speech-language pathologists who demonstrate a well-rounded therapeutic skillset to improve the quality of life of patients with speech-language-swallowing therapy needs.

This program is the ONLY program in the University System of Georgia (USG) affiliated with an academic health center - Augusta University Medical Center.  Graduates from this program will improve community health by increasing the provision of highly qualified SLP graduates to fill the nationwide critical shortage. Graduates will be well prepared for the Praxis Exam in Speech-Language Pathology required for state licensure.  In addition, graduates will obtain the minimum 400 clinical clock hours supervised by American Speech-Hearing Association (ASHA) certified clinical supervisors, a requirement for full eligibility to complete the Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY).  Graduates will demonstrate professional practice competencies leading to the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP), a nationally recognized certification required for employment. The program will assist graduates with professional state licensure by the Georgia Board of Speech-Language Pathology and the Georgia Educator Certificate in the field of speech-language pathology by the Georgia Board of Education.
