The Advanced Counseling Certificate Program in Counselor Education is designed for individuals who already have earned a master’s in counseling or a related field (psychology, social work, marriage and family) and who wish to enroll in specific courses required for School Counseling Certification and/or Professional Licensure. The program objectives are to assist practicing counselors 1) to develop greater expertise in their desired profession and 2) to fulfill the state (and surrounding state) requirements for school counseling certification and/or professional licensure. The program will allow candidates to pursue certification and/or licensure in order to enhance their professional development or career path.

The Advanced Counseling Certificate Program requires completion of 9-21 hours of post-graduate study. Candidates can choose the certificate emphasis in one of two areas: School Counseling or Professional Licensure. An emphasis in School Counseling will be designed for candidates who wish to fulfill state requirements for school counseling certification. Meanwhile, the emphasis in Professional Licensure will enable candidates to fulfill requirements related to state standards for Licensed Professional Counselors.

Admissions criteria will include a master’s degree in counseling or a related field from an accredited program, Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Millers Analogy Test (MAT) scores, a 3.25 minimum grade point average (GPA) on all graduate work, graduate level transcripts, a letter of intent, two letters of recommendation and an interview with program faculty. Test scores may be waived depending on previous academic record (degrees earned) and direct professional counseling experience.

*Note

Programs of study are individualized to reflect the previous Master’s degree requirements, and what is needed to gain licensure.

Through advising, the type of Internship experience required for certification or licensure will be included depending on the needs of the candidate. If an Internship experience is required, that course would become part of the elective list for them. Advising after acceptance will determine the type and length of clinical experience required.
