Admissions Information for Biomedical Science Ph.D. Majors

The College of Graduate Studies offers the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in the following biomedical science areas: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Anatomy, Genomic Medicine, Molecular Medicine, Neuroscience, Oral Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Vascular Biology. Outstanding areas of research in these programs include: cancer biology, cardiovascular diseases, obesity/diabetes, inflammation/infection and neurological diseases, to name a few. First-year Ph.D. students are admitted via a common admissions process to the Ph.D. program in biomedical sciences at GHSU. After completing first-year core coursework and laboratory rotations, students choose a research mentor and enter the Ph.D. program in which that faculty member has an appointment. In each program, candidates complete a Ph.D. dissertation based on original research. Completion of the Ph.D. program requires approximately five years of full-time study. Students accepted into the biomedical sciences Ph.D. program will be considered on an annual basis for a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) package, which provides competitive stipend support ($23,000 for the 2010/2011 year) as well as a reduced tuition fee of only $25 per semester. Graduate Research Assistants also receive, at no cost to them, single-person health insurance under the GHSU student group policy.

Application Fee: Biomedical Science PhD deadline is December 31 for applicants who are U.S. citizens (or hold a permanent resident status) to receive consideration of an application fee refund. Standard fee for all other applicants and for domestic applicants after the Dec. 31 deadline.

Applications and supporting materials received after the program deadline will be considered on a space-available basis only.

** The deadline is December 31 for (A) applicants who are US citizens (or hold permanent resident status) to receive an application fee refund; or (B) international applicants to submit international transcripts for consideration to receive a credentials evaluation at the expense of GHSU.

Minimum Degree Requirement: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university. Degrees awarded from international universities and colleges must be verified as the U.S. equivalent of Bachelor’s or higher degree.

Official Transcript: Official transcripts are required from all colleges ever attended. Transcripts should be mailed to GHSU’s OAA directly from the Registrar’s Office of the institution. Applicants may also deliver or mail official transcripts to GHSU’s OAA if the transcript remains in the original, unopened, sealed and stamped/signed envelope from the Registrar’s Office at the institution.

Transcript/credential evaluation of foreign transcripts: An official, professional course-by-course evaluation based on official transcripts and documents is required for all foreign educational transcripts and documents from one of the following three credentials evaluation services: Josef Silny & Associates, Inc., World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE). Silny and WES are recommended. Official evaluations based on unofficial transcripts, documents, or copies will not satisfy this requirement.

Special consideration: Applicants can request consideration to receive a credentials evaluation at the expense of GHSU. Applications, official transcripts and other application materials must be sent to GHSU by December 31 to be eligible to receive this consideration.

To be considered for a transcript evaluation at our expense you must provide:

  • all official academic transcripts
  • all official graduation certificates - or an official letter confirming the awarding of the degree issued by the awarding institution
  • all official degree certificates including all final or provisional degree certificates issued by the institutions attended
  • all individual mark sheets indicating all subjects taken and marks obtained for all years of post-secondary study - issued by the institution responsible for conducting the examinations

Additional educational documents may be requested by the evaluation service for the purpose of completing the official course-by-course transcript evaluation.

References: References/recommendations from three individuals are required using the Admissions Reference Form for Graduate Programs at Georgia Health Sciences University. Referees should be individuals either qualified to assess applicants prior academic, work, research and/or clinical experience as applicable.

Official GRE Scores: All official GRE scores must be submitted to GHSU’s OAA directly from the Education Testing Service (ETS) and must be less than five years old. The institution code for submission of GRE scores to GHSU is 5406. Do not select a department code.

TOEFL exam score: Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test scores are required for applicants whose first language is not English. The institution code for submission of TOEFL scores to GHSU is 5406. Do not select a department code.

Minimum TOEFL score requirement: Minimum score of 550 paper-based, 213 computer based or 79 internet based.

GPA: Recommended minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

GRE: Recommended minimum GRE score of 1000 (sum of verbal and quantitative sections).

Experience: Recommended laboratory research experience documented in one or more letters of recommendation from a supervisor or mentor.

Other: Although no specific science courses are pre-requisites, a strong science course load is recommended.

Application Process:

Applicant must first submit online application. Once the Office of Academic Admissions has received your application for admissions you will receive an email confirmation with instructions for submitting the remaining application materials, such as references, transcripts, and test scores. Submitting a complete application packet is required. Application is to the Biomedical Science program not to a specific major. Students are admitted via a common admissions process and select a major at the end of their first year. Detailed instructions can be found on the application instruction page.
