About the College

The College of Graduate Studies (CGS) at Georgia Regents University (GRU) is part of one of only four public comprehensive research institutions in the state of Georgia. Since 1951, we have delivered outstanding training, research, clinical and educational opportunities for graduate students.  Currently, students at GRU can choose from more than 50 graduate degree and advanced certificate programs.

The College of Graduate Studies’ almost 320 graduate faculty members are selected based on experience in research, scholarship and education. They are drawn from the faculties of GRU’s Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business, Dental Medicine, Education, Medicine, Science and Mathematics and Nursing. Class sizes are small, and the faculty excels in cultivating and modeling supportive, collegial and professional relationships with students.

Application Deadlines

Application deadlines are program specific. Early application and early submission of all supporting materials is highly encouraged. Applications should be completed and submitted before the program’s deadline. Supporting documentation must be post-marked by the specified program deadline date to meet the deadline. All official required documentation must be received before an admission decision can be made. Supporting documents must be sent to address indicated by the program.  Some programs may accept applications and/or supporting materials after the deadline on a space-available basis. Others will not. Please check with your program of interest for details.

Application Fee

The application fee is $50 and due at time of application. *This fee is non‐refundable.

*Biomedical Sciences and Biostatistics Ph.D. Applicants Only: Applicants to these two programs will receive a refund of the application fee for applicants if they are United States citizens or individuals with a permanent resident status who apply no later than December 15 of the year prior to the standard application deadline/prior to anticipated enrollment.

General Admission Requirements

Applicants are instructed to carefully review program requirements for additional and specific information and instructions.

Minimum of Bachelor’s or Higher Degree or Equivalent from an Accredited College or University
  • Degrees awarded from international universities and colleges must be verified as the U.S. equivalent of a Bachelor’s or higher degree
Official transcripts from all Colleges and/or Universities
  • Official transcripts are required from all universities and colleges ever attended and currently attending. To remain official, all transcripts must remain in the original, unopened, sealed and stamped/signed envelope from the Registrar’s office of the issuing institution.  Alternatively, GRU will accept official electronic transcripts from the registrar’s office at your prior institution. Electronic transcripts should be directed to
  • Only in the case of transcripts from international colleges/universities will an official course‐by‐course transcript evaluation based on official transcripts and documents be accepted in lieu of an official transcript. Official transcript evaluations based on unofficial transcripts, documents, or copies will not fulfill this requirement.
Three References/Recommendations
  • Recommendations from three individuals are required. Referees should be individuals qualified to critically assess the applicant’s prior academic, employment, artistic, research and/or clinical experience and qualifications (as applicable) as well as the applicant’s potential as a graduate student in the field/program selected.
Official Standardized Exam Scores

Most academic programs require official standardized exam scores such as: Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), Miller Analogies Test (MAT), and/or other standardized exams such as GACE (Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators) or NDBE (National Dental Board Exam). Consult the specific program regarding test requirements and minimum exam score requirements and/or recommendations.  Standardized exams scores must be reported directly from the testing agency to GRU to be considered as official. Copies of student score reports are not accepted as official.

  • GRE:
    • use institution code 5406  for all programs requiring GRE scores
    • Do not list a department code.
    • All scores must be less than five years old.
  •  MAT:
    • Official Miller Analogy Test (MAT) scores may be substituted for GRE scores in in select education programs (see program specific admission requirements ) and graduate nursing programs, with the exception of Nursing Anesthesia and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing.
    • use institution code  1108 for all programs requiring  MAT scores
    • Do not list a department code.
    • All scores must be less than five years old.
  • GMAT:
    • Official GMAT scores are required by the MBA program. 
    • Use institution code 5336
  • GACE:
    • Official GACE scores are required by specific education programs. 
    • use institution code 405 for all programs requiring  GACE scores.
  • NDBE:
    • Official NDBE Part 1 can be accepted in place of GRE scores, only for MS Oral Biology program. Exams must be taken within the last five years, with a minimum score of 80.
As applicable, applicants must also submit the following:
  • Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores, if your first language is not English. A minimum score of 550 (paper‐based), 213 (computer‐based), or 79 (Internet‐based) is required. Some programs require higher minimum score. Scores must be sent directly to the GRU- Office of Academic Admissions by the Educational Testing Service.
    • use institution code 5406 
    • TOEFL scores must be less than two years old.
    • Exemption from the TOEFL requirement is allowed for graduate applicants who submit proof of earning a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college/university where English is the language of instruction.
  • Verification of transcripts from foreign colleges and universities by an approved transcript evaluation service. An official course-by-course transcript evaluation based on official transcripts and documents is required. Official transcript evaluations based on unofficial transcripts, documents, or copies will not fulfill this requirement. See details at

    Biomedical Science and Biostatistics Ph.D. Applicants Only: Applicants to these two programs can request consideration to receive a credentials evaluation at the expense of each program. Applications, official transcripts and other application materials must be sent to GRU’s Office of Academic Admissions by December 15 for applicants of the year prior to anticipated enrollment to be eligible to receive this consideration.
  • If accepted, international students will need to submit documentation of personal funds before a Form I‐20 Certificate of Eligibility can be issued.

Interviews: Some programs require interviews. Interviews are by invitation only. Applicants will be selected for an interview based on an initial review of submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified directly by the program if they are selected for an interview.

Additional Application/Admission Information
  • Substitutions and/or waivers of minimum admission requirements must first be supported and authorized at the program level and then formally approved by the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies.  Substitutions and/or waivers of minimum admission requirements are typically granted only in rare cases with strong justification and valid rationale.

  • Applicants deferred to another semester are subject to all admission requirements and program requirements in effect for the semester to which they are deferred. 
  • In accordance with Board of Regents Policy 4.1.6, all applicants will be required to provide validation of lawful presence in the United States. Graduate Research Assistantships

Students accepted into Ph.D. programs may be eligible for a Graduate Research Assistantship, which provides a very competitive stipend (currently set at $23,000 for the 2012/2013 academic year) as well as a reduced tuition fee of only $25 per semester. Graduate Research Assistants also receive, at no cost to them, single-person health insurance under the institutions student group policy.
