Description

The Biochemistry and Cancer Biology program provides cutting-edge research training in diverse cancer-related systems. Faculty research strengths include colitis and inflammatory carcinogenesis, epigenetics, tumor immunology, tumor progression and metastasis.

Financial Support

Students accepted as full time students into the program may be eligible for a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA), which provides a competitive stipend ($23,000 for the 2014/2015 academic year) as well as a reduced tuition fee of only $25 per semester. Graduate Research Assistants also receive, at no cost to them, single-person health insurance under the GRU student group policy. Continuation of an assistantship is contingent on the availability of funds and on satisfactory academic progress. Students are responsible for paying standard required fees each semester.

Semester Three (Summer)

You must also take XXXX9210 Investigation of A Problem. XXXX will be the major program you choose to pursue.

Second Year and Beyond: Biochemistry and Cancer Biology Advanced Curriculum

The Doctor of Philosophy curriculum is not lock-step; students do not graduate as a class at the end of a specific semester. The average time to degree is approximately 5 years of full-time, year-round study; acceptable duration of the program is between 3 and 7 years. The number and type of advanced (2nd year and beyond) or elective courses vary, and may include courses within the Biochemistry and Cancer Biology program as well as courses in other disciplines.

Biochemistry and Cancer Biology Required Courses

BCMB 8201 - Current Topics and Techniques in Molecular Biology
BCMB 9010 - Seminar in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
The seminar course must be taken every semester offered until admission to candidacy and dissertation requirements are complete.
BCMB 9210 - Investigation of a Problem
Investigation of a Problem must be taken every semester until admission to candidacy requirements are complete.
BCMB 9300 - Research
Research must be taken every semester after admission to candidacy until dissertation requirements are met.

Elective Course Options

Advanced course in another discipline or biomedical science major (selections require approval from mentor and program director)

Additional Requirements

In addition to specific course requirements, students must complete additional PhD degree requirements, including satisfactory performance on the Comprehensive Examination, development and approval of a research proposal, writing and approval of the doctoral dissertation, and satisfactory performance on the Final Oral Examination (dissertation defense).
