Bachelor of Arts with a major in Communications and a concentration in Public Relations


Do you love films? Are you excited about promotions? Interested in learning to produce a radio show or shoot a documentary? How about acting? Enjoy debate and public speaking? All of these are possible through coursework in the Department of Communications.

The B.A. in Communications has five concentrations from which to choose: Communication Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, Television/Cinema and Theatre.

Extracurriculars include: Monday Night Film Series, Film Club, Public Relations Club, Bell Ringer newspaper, Phoenix magazine, annual speech contest, theatre productions, and Lambda Pi Eta National Honors Society.

Scholarships: Communications Majors are encouraged to apply for departmental scholarships. Information is available in the main departmental office in Allgood Hall.

Internships: Many internship possibilities are available for students in the Department of Communications. Information is available in the main departmental office in Allgood Hall.

Public relations is about learning to build and maintain relationships between an organization and its stake holders. That can include the community where the organization is located, employees, legislators, and the press. PR’s guiding principle is social responsibility and greater long term gain for both the organization and its constituents.

Careers in Public Relations
There are many avenues open to PR specialists. Some of these career paths include working in:

Radio and television companies
Public service organizations
Sports and entertainment organizations
Public opinion research firms
Hospitality and tourism industry
Public relations firms
Nonprofit organizations
