NURS 4627 - Topics in Obstetric Nursing

The purpose of this course is to provide opportunities for students to deepen and expand their knowledge base in childbearing processes, family dynamics, and the nursing process. Theoretical information will be presented and discussed in a didactic setting. Current trends and issues relevant to deviations from the normal childbearing process will be investigated. Students also will explore the professional role of the nurse when dealing with individuals and families during the childbearing period. Specific roles to be examined are the legal and ethical responsibilities of the nurse during crisis situations. The cognitive component of this course will cover topics related to complex acute and chronic problems that affect perinatal clients and their families. Students will be given opportunities to determine interventions for pathophysiologic and psychosocial problems occurring during childbearing. Principles of risk management and the nursing process are used as a framework to examine the nursing care interventions presented. Teaching learning principles involved in patient education and ethical/moral dilemmas facing nursing personnel caring for the tertiary high-risk family unit are addressed. Learning activities are designed to require critical thinking skills, stimulate a spirit of inquiry and an appreciation of the role of the nurse and related research in clinical problem solving. Classes and conferences are designed to increase self-directed learning, peer, collaboration and critical thinking skills. Students may have opportunities to apply principles from classes in specific patient care situations.
