The purpose of this course is to provide a sociological analysis of “deviance” with an emphasis on the social construction of deviance and deviant behavior. The course explores major theoretical explanations for understanding and defining who and what gets defined as deviant and under what circumstances as well as the social organization of deviance. This course uses an integrated approach to examine how theories of delinquency causation influence public policy responses. The course focuses on juvenile justice as a legal system, examines motives for the development of the juvenile court system, and analyzes the organization and processes of the contemporary juvenile court and correctional system. This course uses a criminological and sociological perspective to understand the criminal justice system’s response to intimate partner abuse and violence. The four week elective provides a basic overview of clinical radiology. Students rotate through most of the major areas of radiology, participating in the clinical diagnostic process.
