About the College
The College of Graduate Studies is part of one of the most prestigious and historic Health Science centers in the Southeast and the country. Since 1951, we have provided outstanding training and education for students enrolled in programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy, combined Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science, Master of Public Health, Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees.
The College of Graduate Studies’ approximately 240 faculty members are selected based on experience in research and education. They are drawn from the faculties of GHSU’s Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Dentistal Medicine, Medicine and Nursing. Class sizes are small, and our faculty excels in cultivating and modeling supportive, collegial and professional relationships with students. The graduate student body is drawn from accredited institutions in the United States and recognized foreign institutions. Their studies in the College of Graduate Studies involve programs encompassing the biomedical sciences, biostatistics, nursing and the allied health professions.

Application Deadlines
Application deadlines are program specific. Early application and early submission of all supporting materials is highly encouraged. Applications should be completed and submitted on-line on or before the program’s deadline. Supporting documentation must be post-marked by the specified program deadline date to meet the deadline. All official required documentation must be received before an admission decision can be made.

Some programs may accept applications and/or supporting materials after the deadline on a space-available basis. Others will not. Please check with your program of interest for details.
On-line Application
Complete and submit the application form and program supplemental form by the application deadline. Applications and supporting materials received after the program deadline will be considered on a space‐available basis.
Application Fee
The application fee must be paid on-line with an electronic check or credit/debit card. *This fee is non‐refundable. Once payment is authorized, your application is submitted to the Georgia Health Sciences University, and you can no longer make changes to it on line. Please contact the Office of Academic Admissions directly to update your application after it has been submitted.
*Biomedical Sciences and Biostatistics Ph.D. Applicants Only: Applicants to these two programs will receive a refund of the application fee for applicants if they are United States citizens or individuals with a permanent resident status who apply no later than December 15 of the year prior to the standard application deadline/prior to anticipated enrollment.

The current status of your application and arrival of your application materials can be monitored on line, by using the Application Status Check link found at the OAA website (www.georgiahealth.edu/Admissions). You will need your GHSU ID number which will be provided to you by OAA when they notify you that they received and processed your application. If you have any questions regarding your GHSU ID number, the application status link, or your official GHSU application file (i.e. discrepancies with what has/has not arrived, what needs to be submitted etc.) please contact the Office of Academic Admissions directly.
All programs require a minimum of Bachelor’s or higher degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.

Degrees awarded from international universities and colleges must be verified as the U.S. equivalent of a Bachelor’s or higher degree.
Official transcripts from all colleges and/or universities
Official transcripts are required from all universities and colleges ever attended and currently attending. Only in the case of transcripts from international colleges/universities will an official course‐by‐course transcript evaluation based on official transcripts and documents be accepted in lieu of an official transcript. Official transcript evaluations based on unofficial transcripts, documents, or copies will not fulfill this requirement.
Official transcripts should be sent to GHSU’s Office of Academic Admission. To remain official, all transcripts must remain in the original, unopened, sealed and stamped/signed envelope from the Registrar’s office of the issuing institution. Alternatively, transcripts can be mailed to GHSU’s Office of Academic Admission directly from the Registrar’s office of the issuing institution. Alternatively, GHSU will accept official electronic transcripts from the registrar’s office at your prior institution. Electronic transcripts should be directed to admissions@georgiahealth.edu.
Three references/recommendations
Recommendations from three individuals are required. Referees should be individuals (usually college professors) qualified to critically assess the applicant’s prior academic, employment, artistic, research and/or clinical experience and qualifications (as applicable) as well as the applicant’s potential as a graduate student in the field/program selected.
Graduate reference forms and letters of recommendation can be submitted online only. As part of the online application process, applicants provide the names and current email addresses for three individuals they have asked to serve as their referees. Once the online application is submitted, each referee will receive an email notification directing him/her to the online site where he/she can complete the reference form and submit his/her letter of recommendation. To change a referee after the application has been submitted, the applicant is instructed to log into his/her CollegeNet account and update the name and current email address for the referee. Status updates of your referees’ submissions will be provided to you directly from CollegeNet.
Official GRE scores (only the General GRE test is required)
Official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores must be sent directly to the Office of Academic Admissions by the Educational Testing Service. Georgia Health Sciences University institution code is 5406 for GRE scores. Do not list a department code. All scores must be less than five years old.
Test takers who took the GRE prior to August 1, 2011 were scored on the old scoring scale of 200-800. Test takers who took the GRE after to August 1, 2011 are scored on the new scoring scale of 130-170. For additional information on the GRE tests in general, please refer directly to the ETS website at http://www.ets.org/gre/.
Offical MAT scores
Official Miller Analogy Test (MAT) scores may be substituted for GRE scores in graduate nursing programs, with the exception of Nursing Anesthesia and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing. Georgia Health Sciences University institution code is 1108 for MAT scores. Do not list a department code. All scores must be less than five years old.
Official National Dental Board Exam (NDBE)
Official NDBE Part 1 can be accepted in place of GRE scores, only for MS Oral Biology program. Exams must be taken within the last five years, with a minimum score of 80.
As applicable, applicants must also submit the following:
- Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores, if your first language is not English. A minimum score of 550 (paper‐based), 213 (computer‐based), or 79 (Internet‐based) is required. Some programs require higher minimum score. Scores must be sent directly to the Office of Academic Admissions by the Educational Testing Service. Georgia Health Sciences University institution code is 5406. TOEFL scores must be less than two years old.
Exemption from the TOEFL requirement is allowed for graduate students who submit proof of earning a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college/university where English is the language of instruction.
- Verification of transcripts from foreign colleges and universities by an approved transcript evaluation service. An official course-by-course transcript evaluation based on official transcripts and documents is required. Official transcript evaluations based on unofficial transcripts, documents, or copies will not fulfill this requirement. See details at www.georgiahealth.edu/Admissions/instud.html
Biomedical Science and Biostatistics Ph.D. Applicants Only: Applicants to these two programs can request consideration to receive a credentials evaluation at the expense of each program. Applications, official transcripts and other application materials must be sent to GHSU by December 15 for applicants of the year prior to anticipated enrollment to be eligible to receive this consideration.
- If accepted, international students will need to submit documentation of personal funds before a Form I‐20 Certificate of Eligibility can be issued.

Some programs require interviews: Interviews are by invitation only. Applicants will be selected for an interview based on an initial review of submitted application materials. Selected applicants will be notified directly by the program.

Substitutions and/or waivers of minimum requirements must first be supported and approved at the program level and then formally approved by the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies.

Applicants deferred to another semester are subject to all admission requirements and program requirements in effect for the semester to which they are deferred.
Additional Information
Graduate Research Assistanships
Students accepted into Ph.D. programs may be eligible for a Graduate Research Assistantship, which provides a very competitive stipend (currently set at $23,000 for the 2012/2013 academic year) as well as a reduced tuition fee of only $25 per semester. Graduate Research Assistants also receive, at no cost to them, single-person health insurance under the GHSU student group policy.
